Did you know?
- root

- stem
- Nothing pumps water up a stem. Evaporation from the leaves pulls it, and can lift water a hundred metres.
- leaf
- A raffia palm's leaf can run longer than a bus, turning one frond into a canopy all by itself.
- bark
- A cork oak can replace its harvested bark, making a bottle stopper come from a tree that keeps on growing.
- pollen
- Butterflies can attract pollen across small air gaps with static electricity, collecting the grains without having to touch the flower directly.
- nectar
- Some plants make nectar outside their flowers, in extrafloral nectaries, to pay ants to patrol the leaves as bodyguards.
- cactus
- A saguaro's pleated trunk expands after rain, working like an accordion as the cactus stores water for drier days.
- bamboo
- Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on record. Some species have been measured growing 91 centimetres in a single day.
- sapling
- About 500 tree seeds orbited the Moon on Apollo 14 in 1971. Over 400 saplings grew from them back home.
- sprout
- Some seeds sprout after exposure to chemicals in smoke, turning a fire's aftermath into a signal that helps new plants begin.
- trunk
- A sequoia's enormous trunk is supported partly by surprisingly shallow roots spreading outward, rather than one equally enormous underground taproot.
- moss
- Mosses have no true roots. They drink through their leaves, and many revive within hours of rain after drying out.
- chlorophyll
- Chlorophyll and the heme in your blood share nearly the same ring. Chlorophyll holds magnesium where heme holds iron.
- photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis remade the sky. Cyanobacteria released oxygen until, about 2.4 billion years ago, it finally began building up in the air.
- fern
- A small New Caledonian fern has about fifty times the DNA in a human genome, making modest leaves an enormous genetic storehouse.
